Basis reviewed 2026-09-05: the FTB 2026 estimated-tax instructions use the 2025 rate schedule and standard deductions of $5,706 single / $11,412 joint. The 1% Behavioral Health Services Tax starts above $1 million of taxable income for both statuses. This bracket illustration omits exemption credits, other credits, itemized deductions, AMT, payroll and federal taxes; FTB requires its tax table for filing at taxable income of $100,000 or less. Ten-year totals repeat year one without forecasting growth or law changes. Have a CPA review your residency, income sources and actual tax bills before making a relocation decision.

How the savings break down

$0

Nevada state income tax

Nevada has no personal state income tax. The California schedule used here has a 12.3% top regular rate, plus 1% on taxable income above $1 million, for a combined top marginal rate of 13.3%. The surcharge threshold is the same for single and joint filers. Credits and other taxes are outside this illustration.

~0.55%

Editable property-tax assumption

The starting Nevada assumption is 0.55% of the entered price. It is not a confirmed tax rate for a particular home. Nevada assessed value is 35% of taxable value, and the district rate and applicable abatements affect the bill. Compare official assessor and treasurer records; an annual tax-increase cap is not a flat reduction in the tax owed.

Review

Estate planning is separate

This calculator does not estimate estate or inheritance taxes. Federal estate-tax rules, deductions, gifts, marital arrangements and state connections require separate review. Check current IRS guidance and discuss your estate plan with a qualified adviser; proposed future taxes are not treated as money saved by a move.

Review

Capital gains need source review

California treatment of a sale depends on residency, the asset and where the income is sourced. A Nevada move alone does not establish that a California property or business sale becomes free of California tax. Review the transaction timing and sourcing with a CPA before making a financial decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Nevada have a state income tax?

Nevada has no personal state income tax. The California schedule used here reaches 12.3%, with a separate 1% Behavioral Health Services Tax on taxable income above $1 million. That produces a 13.3% top combined marginal rate, not 14.3%. Moving does not necessarily end tax on California-source income.

How much lower is Nevada property tax compared to California?

There is no fixed percentage reduction for every move. Compare the actual tax bills, assessment basis, district charges and applicable abatements for both properties. This calculator starts with illustrative rates of 1.10% and 0.55% applied to equal-priced homes; change those assumptions to match your research. They are not verified regional averages.

How accurate is this calculator?

This is a before-credit bracket illustration. The FTB 2026 estimated-tax instructions prescribe the 2025 schedule and standard deductions, which we use. Credits, itemized deductions, AMT and residency calculations are omitted; the FTB tax table applies to filing at taxable income of $100,000 or less. Actual tax and relocation savings can differ.

Will I still owe California taxes after I move?

You may. California generally taxes worldwide income while you are a resident and California-source income while you are a nonresident. A part-year move requires the applicable residency and sourcing calculations. Rental property, services and business or investment income can need separate analysis; ask a CPA to review your situation before relying on a savings estimate.

What about sales tax?

Sales tax is outside this calculator. State and local rates depend on the purchase location and applicable rules. Use current state tax-agency rate lookup tools for the specific California and Nevada locations you are comparing. A property-tax or income-tax illustration does not establish the total change in your household cost of living.

How long does it take to establish Nevada residency?

California tax residency depends on the facts, including domicile, the purpose and duration of absences, and your connections to each state. There is no universal 18-month waiting period that this tool can apply to every move. Review FTB Publication 1031 and obtain advice for your actual circumstances; changing a license or mailing address alone is not a determination.
