The community of Stead makes up the western portion of Lemmon Valley, stretching north to the Reno-Stead Airport. The Reno-Stead Airport was originally established as the Reno Army Airport in 1942 to train military forces. Renamed in 1951 to honor Croston Stead of the Nevada National Guard, Stead Airfield served as a special forces training center for ten years. It shifted into the city of Reno’s control in 1966, reopening as the Reno-Stead Airport. William “Bill” Stead brought the Reno Air Races to the airfield in honor of his brother Croston. Today, the STIHL National Championship Air Races calls the airport home every fall.
Silver Lake Drybed rests at the west edge of Stead and separates it from the northern Red Rock community. The Sierra Sage Golf Course is an 18-hole course at the foot of the Peavine Mountains. The lush greens stretch to Stead Boulevard, the main street of activity for the neighborhood. Across the boulevard is Stead Elementary School, conveniently located next to O’Brien STEM Academy, the middle school for the area.
Both schools prepare students for North Valleys High School in nearby Golden Valley. North Valleys and Hug High School have been rivals since the school’s opening in 2001. Students may choose to attend TMCC High School to focus on a specific career path or earn college credit. The high school is a part of Truckee Meadows Community College, the highly regarded two-year college in Sun Valley.

The Lemmon Valley Community Center is another popular spot for recreation. This center offers a baseball field, a basketball court, and a football/soccer field. North Valleys Regional Park is also available, providing three additional baseball fields to athletes. Sierra Safari Zoo is the only zoo in northern Nevada and is on the southern side of U.S. Highway 395.
