Fielding Lemmon was the first pioneer settler to the north valley, now named after him, and in 1861, established his ranch in the southwest corner of the valley. The farm served as a rest stop for travelers through the valley and became a passageway as more forms of transportation developed in northern Nevada. About 60 years later, a dirt road formed from Reno to the Nevada-California border, passing through Fielding Lemmon’s farm. This road became U.S. Highway 395 in 1933.
Today, Lemmon Valley is a part of the north valleys of Reno, sitting between Golden Valley and Cold Springs. On the northwest side of Lemmon Valley is Swan Lake Nature Study Area, where visitors can choose from numerous walking trails. The Lemmon Valley Community Center offers three baseball fields, a basketball court, and a football/soccer field to visitors. Every fall, the Reno-Stead Airport hosts the STIHL National Championship Air Races, a crowd-pleasing Reno event since 1964.
Sky Vista Shopping Center is a vital hub for Lemmon Valley’s grocery stores and businesses. Shoppers can choose from Walmart Supercenter, Smith’s, Grocery Outlet Bargain Market, Walgreens, and a CVS Pharmacy. The North Hills Shopping Center of nearby Golden Valley has a Raley’s, Anytime Fitness, and the North Valleys Library. Restaurants like Steak n’ Shake, Sizzling Wok and Sushi, and Longboards Beach Fired Pizza fill the North Hills Shopping Center.
The Washoe County School District provides exceptional schools to residents and students of Lemmon Valley. Lemmon Valley Elementary School, home of the Leopards, leads students into O’Brien STEM Academy. High schoolers attend North Valleys High School. The North Valleys’ Panthers have rivaled Hug High School since 2001. Truckee Meadows Community College is the best two-year college in northern Nevada. TMCC also offers a high school program allowing students to earn an associate’s degree for early college credit. The school is an easy commute for north valley residents located on Dandini Boulevard in Sun Valley, next door to Desert Research Institute.
