Somersett, Reno Overview

In 1991, Blake Smith began purchasing the land farthest west in Northwest Reno. He hired professional golfer and course designer Tom Kite to begin work on the Somersett Golf & Country Club. That would become the center of the master-planned community of Somersett. When the golf course opened in 2005, plans for Somersett were well underway, expecting 3,300 homes by its completion.

Nestled in the foothills of Northwest Reno, Somersett is truly an escape from the city of Reno. It is only six miles from Verdi, Nevada, and a quick 30-minute drive to Truckee, California. The Somersett Golf & Country Club still serves as the heart of the continuously growing community. The private Canyon Nine Golf Course was built as a 9-hole, “just for fun” course where Somersett HOA fees cover your membership.

Somersett Park East brushes up against the golf course, providing a basketball court and jungle gym for recreation. In total, there are 24 trails to choose from within the community itself. Amongst these are the Cityside Trail, Silver Willow Trail, and Eagle Trail. The Somersett Welcome Center shares a center with Sakana Sushi and Grace Day Spa. Nextdoor, the Somersett Club at Town Center offers both an interactive pool and junior Olympic pool, two spas, a full gym, and a massage room.

Although Somersett is slightly distant from the heart of Reno, there are plenty of great restaurants in the area. The Grille at Somersett is beloved by members of the club as it’s on-site. Burger Me! is a fantastic restaurant locally owned and operated just miles outside of the Somersett entrance.

McQueen Crossing Shopping Center is on Robb Drive and May Anne Avenue. Raley’s is popular in the center, along with Umpqua Bank, Bully’s Sports Bar & Grill, Dickeys Barbecue Pit, and Sakana Xpress. Across the street, you’ll find Bangkok Cuisine, Casa Grande, and Juice Box Yoga. Ridgeview Plaza is a shopping center convenient to the neighborhood, including Safeway, Kohl’s, Ross, Wingstop, and Chipotle. Canyon Creek Shopping Center is across North McCarran Boulevard, providing Save Mart, Flowing Tide, Ijji 4 Korean Bar-B-Que, Pokie King, and Walgreens. Planet Fitness plans to open a location in the center as well in 2020.

Verdi Elementary School serves younger students of Somersett, followed by Billinghurst Middle School. McQueen High School, home to the Lancers, is the highschool of the Somersett community, neighboring the Northwest Reno Library to its north. The school opened in 1982, named after Dr. Robert McQueen, a former professor of psychology at the University of Nevada, Reno. The school rivals Reno’s first high school, the Reno High Huskies.
