Panther Valley, Reno Overview
The farmers that settled in northern Nevada eventually began to spread into the north valleys of Reno. Panther Valley was one of these surrounding neighborhoods, more commercialized than the others due to its proximity to the railroads. Panther Valley is on the west side of Red Hill next to Sun Valley. Desert Research Institute marks the meeting point of Sun Valley and Panther Valley.
The Sierra Sage Golf Course is an 18-hole course resting at the foot of the Peavine Mountains, about 10 minutes north of Panther Valley. Panther Valley Park is a small recreational area featuring a multi-use field, playground, and a splash park.
Students of Panther Valley attend schools throughout the north valleys like Alice Smith Elementary School of Golden Valley. O’Brien STEM Academy in Stead serves middle schoolers of the surrounding valleys. High schoolers usually attend North Valleys High School, home of the Panthers and local rivals of the Hug High School Hawks. Truckee Meadows Community College offers a high school program in addition to its college-level courses. TMCC High School helps students focus on career-specific courses or get a head start on college credits.
Rancho San Rafael Regional Park is beloved by all of Reno as it is full of lush walking paths, botanical gardens, a museum, event center, and dog park. The Off Leash Dog Park is one of the largest in the city, making it worth the commute from all over Reno.
The Great Reno Balloon Races have called Rancho San Rafael home since 1982, filling the skies above with colorful balloons and light shows every September. The STIHL National Championship Air Races take off from the Reno-Stead Airport every fall, bringing the community up close and personal with hundreds of private, custom, and military aircraft.
Bonanza Casino is five minutes from Panther Valley, the only casino near the community without heading to downtown Reno. Cactus Creek Prime Steakhouse and Branding Iron Cafe are two excellent restaurants within the casino. Across the street, you can enjoy Mexican food from Carniceria Tejaro or enjoy a drink at Woodrow’s Tap Room. When you’re looking for a wider variety or feeling lucky at the casino, downtown Reno is a short 15-minute trip down Virginia Street.
