As you head north on Pyramid Lake Road from Spanish Springs to Pyramid Lake, you pass through Palomino Valley. The region stretches the length of Pyramid Lake to Interstate 80, reaching from the North Valleys to Wadsworth, Nevada, and encompassing both Tule Peak and Virginia Peak. Palomino Valley is a 30-minute drive from Reno and only 10 minutes north of Spanish Springs. The rural valley stretches past various private properties, horse properties, and Nevada’s open space controlled by the Bureau of Land Management.
Palomino Valley has wild mustangs living and migrating in its desert environment throughout the Palomino Valley Park Site. The National Wild Horse and Burro Center of Palomino Valley is the largest adoption facility on BLM land in the entire country. The center is open six days a week, where all of their animals are usually available for adoption. The Ironwood Events Center and Boarding is available to horse owners providing boarding services, two indoor arenas, and an outdoor arena, as well as horse trainers and riding lessons.
While the community is relatively remote, it is only 20 minutes from one of the most prominent shopping centers in Sparks. Sparks Galleria is home to Costco Wholesale, the Home Depot, Best Buy, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Cost Plus World Market. Fitness Connection is a premiere gym facility in Northern Nevada, calling the galleria it’s home. Fantastic restaurants like Tha Joint Sushi & Grill, Blind Onion Pizza & Pub, and Red Robin are also in the center for hungry shoppers. Eagle Landing Plaza is a little closer to Palomino Valley providing a Walgreens Pharmacy and Bully’s Sports Bar & Grill. In the shopping center opposite Eagle Landing you’ll find Save Mart, Moreno’s Mexican Bar and Grill and the Lake Bar & Grill.
Palomino Valley’s desert landscape provides ample recreation for horseback riding, hiking, and OHV trails. When you’re looking for more leisurely activities, Eagle Canyon Park and East Canyon Park are the closest neighborhood parks to the valley. Eagle Canyon Park has two baseball fields and a Little League field. Directly next to Eagle Canyon is East Canyon Park providing a jungle gym and two multi-use fields which can also serve as additional baseball fields as needed. Lazy 5 Regional Park is south of Eagle Canyon near Spanish Springs Library. The park’s water play area keeps the park busy through the summer months with the playgrounds, fields, and Spanish Springs Skatepark sharing the same parking lot.
When you’re looking to play a round of golf, Kiley Ranch Golf Course is a fantastic place to enjoy a round of 9-hole. Relax in the clubhouse complete with a full bar, practice your swing at the driving range, or try your skills on the footgolf course. Red Hawk Golf and Resort is a private golf club in the center of Sparks. Communities like Pioneer Meadows, Cimarron, Cimmaron Highlands, and Wingfield Springs encompass the golf course. David’s Grill has excellent service and food served overlooking the golf course and surrounding mountains.
Washoe County School District serves students of Palomino Valley beginning with Alyce Taylor Elementary School located at the northern edge of Spanish Springs. Shaw Middle School only two miles away from Alyce Taylor is next for students. Spanish Springs High School takes the high schoolers living throughout Palomino Valley. The Spanish Springs Cougars joined the school district in 2001.
