Coffeebar on Mount Rose Street is popular with the locals. The Riverwalk District is home to some of the area’s best restaurants and shopping. Also nearby is Shopper’s Square, which has some of the smaller shops and restaurants.

Old Southwest is located in the Washoe County School District. One of the schools in the district, Mount Rose Elementary School was built in 1912 and added to the National Register of Historic Places.
