Hidden Valley, Reno Overview
Amidst the rapidly growing city of Reno, four men began discussing the necessities that this southeastern Reno community was lacking. It was over coffee in 1956 that Link Piazzo, Emmett Saviers, Del Machabee, and William Kottinger Sr. came up with the concept of Hidden Valley.
Today, Hidden Valley is tucked away east of the Reno-Tahoe International Airport on Mira Loma Drive and Veterans Parkway. The planned community has grown into 1,300 homes surrounding the private Hidden Valley Country Club. Hidden Valley Country Club is home to an 18-hole golf course overlooking downtown Reno and the beautiful mountains that surround the valley. The country club also provides a pool, two tennis courts, and a fitness center to its members.
A wonderful gym near the area is Double Diamond Athletic Club. Double Diamond offers a junior Olympic pool, tennis courts, a kids club and classes like martial arts for adults and children.
Mira Loma Park offers something for everyone: a playground, baseball and softball fields, basketball courts, a tennis court, a soccer and football field, and an urban walking trail. When all that activity makes you hungry, make lunch at the barbecue pits and picnic area. You will find the Rattlesnake Mountain Skatepark packed on the weekends since it is the best place to skate near Hidden Valley.
Right next to Hidden Valley is the Mira Loma Shopping Center complete with Raley’s, CVS Pharmacy, and the newest Flowing Tide Pub. Meadowood Mall is only 10 minutes from the country club and has your usual mall favorites plus Round 1 Bowling & Amusement and Dick’s Sporting Goods. Smithridge Plaza is across South McCarran Boulevard from the mall, with the only Trader Joe’s in Reno. Del Monte Plaza faces the mall from the western side of South Virginia Street, providing a Whole Foods Market, Best Buy, Barnes & Noble, and local favorite Great Basin Brewing Company. Firecreek Crossing provides a Walmart Supercenter, Sam’s Club, Michaels, TJ Maxx, Ross, and so much more.
Hidden Valley Elementary School serves kindergarten through fifth-grade students conveniently within the neighborhood. Students then head off to Pine Middle School, only a 10-minute drive away, or Vaughn Middle School, 15 minutes from Hidden Valley. Earl Wooster High School has been in the Washoe County School District since 1962. The home of the Colts became a part of the International Baccalaureate program in 1996. The Great Basin Outdoor School is a program allowing students to participate in day and overnight ecology camping trips throughout northern Nevada.
