During the early years of the Comstock Lode, miners foraged the eastern foothills of the Sierra Nevadas only to find substantial amounts of “galena.” This lead-sulfide mixture in the mines meant the gold mined would yield no profit. It did provide the small town its unique name of Galena as it shifted into a sawmill and lumber center.
Galena is east of Montreux Golf & Country Club and south of Mount Rose Highway. The Washoe County School District serves Galena’s students. Kindergarteners through sixth graders attend Hunsberger Elementary School, located on Arrowcreek Parkway. After Hunsberger, Galena students will attend Pine Middle School until Herz Middle School opens in 2020. Galena High School, home of the Grizzlies, opened in 1992 to students of south Reno.
The Summit Reno is a mere 15 minutes from Galena, creating a rural and urban shared lifestyle for residents. The Summit has over 60 different retailers plus eight restaurants. Galena residents can spend their day shopping at Dilliard’s or Pottery Barn, enjoy a meal from local restaurants Burger Me! or Miguel’s Mexican Food, and finish their day with the latest film release at Sierra Summit Century Theater. The Toiyabe National Forest surrounds Galena, providing residents numerous outdoor opportunities. Galena Creek Recreation Area sits at the base of Mount Rose and welcomes visitors into the surrounding hiking areas via the Galena, Jones, and Whites Creek Trails. The Galena Creek Regional Park offers tours guided by park rangers, seasonal fishing at Marilyn Pond, and the Galena Creek Visitor Center can inform you of all the park’s activities. Bowers Mansion Regional Park is 20 minutes south of the community. The mansion is a historical site that has maintained the lifestyle of the wealthy during the Comstock Lode. Roughly 10 minutes from Galena is Wolf Run Golf Club, surrounding the community of Fieldcreek Ranch. The golf course is an 18-hole, public golf course available to residents. A few minutes west of Galena is the Montreux Golf & Country Club and the surrounding master-planned community. Jack Nicklaus designed the private golf course and he considers it one of his “top five courses.” For 20 years beginning in 1999, The course hosted the Reno-Tahoe Open, later renamed the Barracuda Championship.
